The Ninth Annual Tea and Zen Seminar is open to those currently studying tea in the Urasenke Tradition. This seminar offers the opportunity to practice tea in the context of Zen meditation, exploring the connection between Zen and the Way of Tea. Following the five-day seminar is a special two-day workshop. The head teacher for the seminar and workshop is Christy Bartlett, Director of the San Francisco Urasenke Foundation. Teaching facilities include the three tea rooms and kitchen of the Green Gulch teahouse and roji. Participants may attend both the seminar and workshop, or either event separately. Overnight accommodations including vegetarian meals will be provided in Green Gulch guest facilities.Five-Day Seminar: The daily schedule includes meditation and instruction in temae (nyumon, konarai, shikaden, okuden). There will also be classes in okashi making, and chashaku carving. A highlight of the seminar is practice with chabana: selecting and placing flowers from the extensive Green Gulch gardens.*Those coming from out of town are advised to arrive on Tuesday, August 4.Two-Day Workshop: Shichijishiki are seven tea practices which were developed in the mid-18th century, inspired by Zen koans, and designed to encourage and embody the collaborative practice of awakening. This workshop is a unique opportunity to study these exercises in the context of Zen practice and teachings.**Those attending only the workshop arrive on Sunday, August 9.
