Dear Tea Practitioner;
It seems like only yesterday that Stewart Lenox and I started this event and now we are holding our tenth Daichakai. Let me start by thanking all the participants, guests and hosts who over the years have made this event possible through your spirit and efforts. Since this is our tenth I think we should celebrate a little. Also this event has been included in the 150th Anniversary of the Kanrin Maru Celebrations. The Asian Art Museum has arranged for the Yabunouchi Wakasosho to put on a program at the museum and he and his people will be joining us the next day at the Daichakai. We are very grateful to the museum and to the Yabunouchi family for making this possible. We hope that all of you will feel similarly and will join us in making what will already be a special event even greater by joining us and gracing us with your presence and participation. I do want to apologize that the extra expenses of bringing people from Kyoto has required me to increase the fee to $60. We hope that with the fee increase we will not lose money on this year's event. As many of you know the price for attending such an event in Japan would be much higher. This is a temporary measure. Also there will be some small changes in format. The Yabunouchi School is not one of the Sen Family traditions and they are the oldest of the tea schools. Both the host and guest procedures are very different from those of us who practice one of the Sen Family or Sen derived schools. Everyone will have the opportunity of seeing the Yabunouchi way, in addition to having tea in the usual manner, and a small lunch. There will also be limitations on participation do to the capacity of the various sites. Please send in your applications as soon as possible. As much as possible I would like to let you choose so what follows are the various sites. Keep in mind that there are limits and attendance must be on a "first come first serve" basis. Therefore we can not guarantee your choices but we will do our best. Groups of more than two are usually not possible. However we do suggest attending with a friend.
